With so much tension, struggle, conflict, and turmoil around us, including sicknesses, economic strife, political instability, and family problems, there is no better way to start the year than to indulge in biblical fasting and prayer and set the tone for the rest of the year. It is always a great time to start a new course and establish the direction for the coming months with prayer and fasting.
Prayer and fasting at the beginning of the year allows us to seek from the Lord the right way for each one of us and for our church family. During this process, we humble ourselves before God and subdue all fleshly desires that may stand in our way of connecting with God. We spend time studying the Word and praying and fasting while listening for instructions for the year from God.
After our “Rebuilding” theme and study series last year, I would have to say of the men we studied about – Nehemiah, Ezra, and Haggai – were men who built a legacy. A legacy is inevitable. We will pass things down to the next generation. For followers of Jesus, leaving a legacy of faith is essential. One of the fundamental and crucial objectives given to us as believers is that of legacy-building.
Legacy is something transmitted by or received from an ancestor, predecessor, or the past. William James said, “The greatest use of a life is to spend it on something that will outlast it.” A legacy is not what you do for yourself. It’s what you do for the benefit of the next generation.
Joel 1:3 states, “Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.”
We are not to keep our wonderful experience of prayer to ourselves, but we are to share it with the current and future generations and allow it to be a legacy. I am reminded of a phrase I often hear a preacher quote, “If Jesus had to pray, what about us?” Jesus prayed and impacted those around him. The disciples prayed, and likewise, they influenced others to be partakers. So did the early Christians. This is an example of a legacy of prayer.
There are a lot of things that impact the strength of our spiritual legacy. However, at the core of any spiritual legacy is our own personal relationship with God. Ultimately, it is how we personally walk with God that fuels what our spiritual legacy will actually become and prayer is vital in this process. Mark Batterson says in his book, The Circle Maker, “Prayer is the inheritance we receive and the legacy we leave.”
As we embark on this exciting new year with our theme, “Building a Legacy of Faith,” we want to start 2025 with six days set apart to seek God with all our hearts in prayer and with fasting. By dedicating the beginning of our year to a time of prayer and fasting, we will intentionally sharpen our spirits by prioritizing God and spending time in His presence. Our hope is for this experience to anchor us to our purpose as the people of God at Kamuning Bible Christian Fellowship.
Prayer and fasting prepares our hearts to hear from God. The practice and discipline of fasting are usually found among those who are thirsty and hungry to hear from God.
It humbles us and awakens us to our great need for and reliance on God. It brings about clarity, as it removes many distractions. As a result, we are better able to discern what comes from within us, what comes from the world, and what comes from God. In other words, the frequency of our hearts is calibrated to be in tune with God’s voice.
Through the six days, you will be praying for specific areas in your life, our church, and our mission. Together, let’s put our faith into action, trusting in the promises of God for us and our church. Church family, let’s earnestly seek the face of God with great expectation as we wait for His revelation and instruction through these seven days of fasting and prayer. “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known” (Jeremiah 33:3).
Whether you choose to fast for one day, several days, or the entire six days, the point is to humble yourself in a new way and draw near to God. Brothers and sisters, let us pray and produce a legacy of prayer, continually pouring out our hearts and seeking God’s face. Endeavor to engage people in fervent prayer with a determination to further advance the kingdom of God through the dynamic power of prayer.
My hope is that we will continue to grow into a church where time spent in prayer is behind every ministry, activity, and meeting; that we continually raise people up, the known and the unknown, to God in prayer. May it be that our church is built on “a legacy of prayer.” The importance and impact of your prayers for the next generation is incalculable. From generation to generation…our prayers outlive us.
We will die, but our prayers will still be very much alive as God honors the prayers whispered at His throne. God uses our prayers for others to supernaturally connect us in ways far beyond what we could imagine, both to Him and to those for whom we are praying. Beyond the temporal benefits, prayer has eternal value, one of the greatest investments anyone can make in life.
