- What does it mean to honor your mother and father? Why do you think God placed such great importance for children to honor parents?
- What do you think of the promise of long life if you honor your parents? There are people who honored their parents but died young, and there are people who did not honor their parents that lived a long life.
- How do you think parents (knowingly or unknowingly) exasperate or provoke their children to anger? Why do you think parents are cautioned not to do this?
Application Questions
- There are many ways to honor your parents. Think of concrete ways you can honor your parents this week.
- For parents: evaluate your interactions with your children in relation to v. 4. Are you actively obeying the Lord’s commands? think of ways you can personally apply the following instructions:
- a) Do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them.
- b) Bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.
- For non-parents: can you think of some practices that your parents carried out that helped raise you in the way of the Lord?
- Are you struggling with honoring your parents, or in bringing up your child according to the Lord’s instructions? Pray for each other and think of ways you can support or help each other.
