- What was Nehemiah’s purpose in going to Jerusalem?
- What did Nehemiah initially do in Jerusalem, before making his intentions known to the people?
- How did the characters in the passage respond to Nehemiah, namely, to the Jews he invited, and to the named foreigners?
Understanding Questions
- What does the “wall” signify and why was it such a disgrace to have the wall in ruins? By rebuilding the wall, what does Israel stand to gain?
- Even before going to Jerusalem, how did Nehemiah prepare himself for the task ahead? How did doing these things help him?
- Who were Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem, and why were they very negative towards Nehemiah and his plans?
Application Questions
- Is there a burden that the Lord placed in your heart that requires you to act, or have you received an invitation to join in doing work for the Lord? What have you done so far in response?
- How can you follow the example of Nehemiah, whenever: a) a new task or opportunity arises, or b) when encountering people who discourage you from doing the Lord’s work?
- Knowing that we are all servants of Jesus and that we cannot be greater than our Master, look for opportunities to serve someone this week. Who did the Lord impress in your heart and how can you serve that person?
