Discovery Question

  1. What was the challenge of Paul to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2-3? What does Paul instruct Timothy to pass on?
  2. What did the author identify as characteristics/traits of a good soldier of Christ?
  3. In Matthew 28:19 – 20, what were the instructions of Jesus to his disciples?

Understanding Questions 

  1. In 2 Timothy 2:2, why did Paul specifically instruct Timothy to entrust what he witnessed  “to reliable people who are qualified to teach others”?
  2. What was the implication of the illustrations Paul used to describe the ideal characteristics of a person who serves Christ? (soldier, athlete and farmer)
  3. How are the messages of 2 Timothy 2:1-7 and Matthew 28:19-20 connected? What do they imply to modern day Christians?

Application Questions

  1. What should we be doing as a church to make sure there is a next generation of faithful teachers who are able to pass God’s message on? List some practical examples and how you might participate in doing this.
  2. When we meet as a church, what could we do to help other Christians receive the same encouragement and warnings that Paul gives to Timothy?
  3. Why do you think our churches tend not to declare the call to endurance and suffering? Why did Timothy tend to shy away from it? What is the result of a willingness to suffer for the gospel?
