Text: Joshua 9

Sermon Series: The Journey of Faith (August 2025 Message Series)

Speaker: Bishop Ef Tendero

Introduction

After a series of victories, Joshua made a bad decision when he walked by sights and not by faith.  He fell into the deception of the Gibeonites when he decided based on what he saw rather than on discernment brought by faith.

I. Fear the threats before us  (vv. 1-2)

  • He lost composure and rationality
  • Assess the threats confronting us
  • evaluate objectively

II. Fall into enticing offers  (vv. 3-11)

  • He was overcome by an enticing offer
  • Beware of enticing offers
  • refuse to be misled by sweet talkers

III. Fail to consult God as needed (vv. 12-15)

  • He did not ask counsel from God (v.14)
  • Consult God all the time
  • Seek the guidance and will of God

IV. Face the consequences of our failure (vv.16-17)

  • People wanted to take revenge and annihilate the Giboeonites
  • Don’t compound our failures
  • Don’t correct a mistake by another mistake
  • Face the consequence and ask God for a solution

Conclusion

Trust in the Lord with all Your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.  Proverbs 3:5-6
